Sinclair Harding Sun and Moon Clock

SUN AND MOON CLOCK

This elegant Skeleton clock with a novel pendulum arrangement features a dramatic hand painted Sun and Moon dial. The dial rotates once a day revealing a Day and Night sky into which is incorporated a Moonphase aperture showing the different phases of the moon throughout the 29 ½ day cycle.

The Pendulum bob is mounted between the enamel dial and the front plate and the bob itself is shaped like the rising Sun which reflects light of its many facets in motion giving added life to the clock.

Between the massively thick plates the movement is light and airy featuring wheels with 5 and 6 crossings and the whole clock is mounted on a wooden base of your choice, French polished to a mirror finish.

The movement is powered by a going barrel and has a minimum 8 days going, wound from the front the key is stored into the side of the base.
Finally the whole clock is protected by a framed glass shade, which does not need to be removed for winding.

Height 60cm (24”)

Width 32cm (12 ½”)

Depth 16cm (6 ¼”)

Sun and Moon Clock dead beat pallet and escape wheel
Escapement

The escapement is a Graham deadbeat, which is not as susceptible to variations in torque from the Going barrel. However this escapement requires accurate manufacture and positioning of the pivot holes. In order to achieve this accuracy the plates are individually Jig bored.

The pallet is made from high carbon steel, through hardened and diamond polished and with the Pendulum is suspended by a thin steel strip, the whole assembly results in a good degree of time keeping.

Sun and Moon Clock, enamel dial and blued hands
Dial and Hands

The dial is enamel, fused onto a Mild steel disc and housed in a heavy sectioned outer and light sectioned inner bezel.

The hands are made in a traditional manner, after rough machining from 1/16” thick mild steel each set of hands are filed in profile, then polished and cleaned. To turn each hand electric blue involves slowly heating the hand in pan of brass filings until the colour is perfectly blue and even. At this point the clock hands are quenched in oil, fixing the colour forever. Finally the hands are again cleaned and protected by a thin coat of Lacquer

Sun and Moon Clock - back view on ebony
The Back view

As with all Sinclair Harding clocks, the Sun and Moon clock looks just as spectacular from any angle.
Here you can see the fine click spring, hammered from a piece of solid brass to achieve shape and its spring characteristics.

Every part in each clock is finished to the highest possible standard – even parts you cannot see and almost every non-moving part is Gold plated to ensure the effect remains as spectacular over time.

The base is made from a wood of your choice and style. The one shown (left) is in Ebony with Brass inlay, for more figured timbers, such as Burr Walnut, Mahogany Curl, the Base can be configured to show more of the Veneers (see below).

Each base style has a pocket to house the Key and Handsetter (a tool used to adjust the clock hands through the glass).

The artist Keith Warrington paints the Sun and Moon dial, and each dial is an individual work of art. Birds are featured in both the day and night scene against a dramatic background.

Every clock made by Sinclair Harding is individually stamped with a unique serial numbered and is Guaranteed for the Lifetime of the original owner.
